My given name is Roslyn I am 50.
I grew up in Toledo, OH and in Littleton, CO. I went to elementary school, high school and college. High school was ... boring. We had classes in everything you have now- English, Sciences, Maths, History, Art, P.E. Favorite subject... My favorite class was in English, Mythology with the Edith Hamilton book. I didn't have a lot of homework. I was one of those who listened with half an ear and did my homework in school.
I had a part time job starting when I was 16 or so. I had a girlfriend and wanted to buy her gifts. So I got a job so I could do that. My money was my own. My parents were wealthy. I also babysat for families on my block.
What was popular? We went hiking and smoked dope. I rode my bike a lot, long distances. I don't know what was popular among teens in general. We all wore jeans and tee shirts with slogans on them. Levi's 501s were popular. I listened to country music by my own choice. My sister made faces and gave me an album by the Rolling Stones, Some Girls.
Some kids dated... I guess I dated. I came out as a lesbian early on, maybe in Jr. High school so I always had a girlfriend. Of course, my folks weren't in on this. Where did we date? Her older brother and sister were into some counter cultural stuff, poetry readings, plays and music, we went with them to those things. I generally paid.
Troubles were about the same as now. Drugs, sex, wanting to grow up and get out and start living a life but not knowing how yet. I hung out with the goodie-two shoes sort of kids. Clean cut, nice kids. Of course there were also those that I went to Grateful Dead concerts with... they were far less clean cut! I never had a huge number of friends. I look at Classmates.com and hardly know any names. My sweetheart ran off to college and I never saw her again. Never spoke to her again.
What about today's kids? I think you are doing the best you can to grow up. You have a lot of distractions, a lot of pressure to achieve. I think the whole monogamous dating thing is foolish. I'm glad my kids didn't do that. I think you should go out with lots of people at the same time. Go out with this one on Friday and that one on Saturday, and someone else next weekend. Dating is for getting to know yourself. It's not for falling "in love", it's for testing the waters of romantic relationships. So many kids are getting serious way too quickly, IMO. Another thing is that kids aren't taught about goal setting. We teach you about choice, sure. Red sweater or blue sweater? But you are not directed in setting goals. Goals are the way we create a life. Ask, "what do I want?" then figure out the steps you need to take to achieve that goal. Start small, with a pizza or something. Then increase the difficulty. This will help you in every facet of your life.
I like teenagers. I like that they are still alive. Still trying things, not stuck in their ways like so many adults.
Write a letter to your Grandma. Ask her these things. And enjoy her reply. Build relationships with your adults. the more adults you have in your life the better off you'll be.
Thank you for asking. I'd love to read your paper when you're through.

Except for the insane females you see on the Maury Povich and Jerry Springer shows - you already know those who embarrass their daughters - it's not right to decorate like you are a youngster. Neither is it right to ask anybody to stop residing after they hit 50 years of age.
