How long does rebar take to rust through?

I'm going to weld together a ladder to get down into the well on my property. The base of the ladder will most likely rest in the bottom of the well, where there is several inches of water. If I welded a ladder out of rebar, how long would I have until it rusted through?

Update:

Is there a way to prevent rusting? Could I put some sort of lacquer on it to rubberize it?

Update 2:

The ladder will be in two fifteen-foot sections, so I'm not sure baking it would be an option. I think I'll check out the marine epoxy. A couple bucks extra won't make a difference in a few years.

likely within 6 years if in water...it'll rust but won't be a problem until there is only half the thickness left in any one place

  • How tall is the ladder?

The best option would be to have it sandblasted and then powder-coated. Powder coating involves baking in an oven so that depends on haow large an item a company can process. You should call some companies in your area that do powder coating and ask for an estimate. Ask them what the maximum size they can coat is.

Hot-dip galvanizing would be ideal, but that's more expensive than a paint job.

A third option is marine-grade epoxy paint. Basically, the stuff they use to paint ships. That's expensive paint but it's worth it.

Note: Spray-on "galvanizing" won't work well on items that are submerged.
