Actually Android is an open source OS so the device manufacturers are not charged a licensing fee like Microsoft's OS. Around 85% of Google's revenue is from advertising the rest comes from their line of Nexus devices and Google Play.

As to why would they make Chrome? Come on have you used Internet Explorer!

It's all about advertising, and services. Android is an open source OS ( based on Linux OS ), and mostly it's free for the moment from Google ( it was created by other other people at 2003, and Google bought it at 2005 ), so Google do not make a lot of money from Android, but it's enough to her that everyone use Android searching the web using Google, or some other tools, like create Gmail account etc.

There are somethings that you do not see directly, for example, if you tried to host a website, the host companies may charge you for letting your site get advertised by Google ( it's not that big mount of money but with millions of site..it counts).

Also Google earth, there are the free version, and the pro version that you have to pay for it (but there are also some GPS companies that may use Google maps.

For Chrome, Google try to make a browser that works great with it's services ( such as YouTube, Google search engine, etc..) so in that way, it can force you to use Google search engine more and more so they gain more money. Yes Chrome is free, but it helps to spread there name and services.

You may say oh but Google is well known, no need to spread it's name, thats true, but if you keep using IE ( internet explorer ) for example, and Microsoft force you to use Bing search engine then more benefits goes to MS more than Google and vice versa.

Advertising, think about it, everyone using the web is seeing Googles ads, and on all of googles services.Google Search, Youtube ( second largest search engine ), Blogger , gmail everything!!! Thats a lot of ads, and so people are willing to pay 2 put up an ad, Also the ads are aimed at people thanks to search history, email history, phone history Tv browsing history video history music history cookie history.

Start goggling u2 (band) long enough and you will notice that your ads will change to offers for u2 tickets!!

And why did they make google chrome, it records 2% of what you type in the address bar, its uses this for... you guessed it, advertising

Check this out its kinda cool
