Does anyone have a 1988 Volvo 850 that has had an oil leak problem?

It is my son's car. He took it to someone who said he had another customer with the same car and problem. He said on the other car, he tried one thing, did not work and tried another and that did not work and ended up replacing a whole section and that finally worked. He said it would cost my son $1400. Has anyone had the same problem and got an oil leak fixed on the same type of car. What was the exact cause and what did it cost you?

wow is that a vague question or what?

assuming that your talking about engine oil,

    the sky is the limit.

i don't know what section this friend of a friend is talking about.

an older volvo can have many leaking problems that get out of

hand if you don't deal with them as they occur.

the crankcase venting system can clog up and then the internal engine

ambient pressures can build up forcing engine oil out of the weakest seals.

on a 1988 all the seals are hard and not sealing as well as they should.

the additional pressures can cause oil everywhere.

front & rear cam seals, rear engine main seals, oil vapor box seals are common.

if equipted with an oil cooler, the hoses get hard and leak @ the fitting.

the crankcase pressure should be checked, it should probably be always at least,a slight vacuum

at all engine speeds, depending a bit if turbo or not.

the likelyhood of a single oil leak is not good.

you can fix the bigest and try to get control of the situation.

if the rear engine crankshaft seal is leaking ( rear main ) it can be 800-1000 dollars to pull

    the transmission and replace it.
