What does FTO stand for in?
front of an officer's name? (Saw it on "COPS".) =]
That's what I had said to my boys. Does it mean he's the trainee or trainer?

Field Training Officer.
An FTO is responsible for training new officers.
Field training is typically three phases (each phase about one month) followed by a two week "shadowing" or "plain clothes" portion where the FTO is not in their normal uniform and is only there to observe how the new officer is doing. The new officer needs to call for additional units an take calls on their own without guidance from the FTO. They wear plain clothes to appear to be just a person on a ride along.
FTO's are sometimes given the rank of Corporal, depending on the department.
