Some ways are becoming safer and others are becoming more dangerous.

Safest in what way?
Airplanes have an excellent safety record in terms of passenger fatalities. Airports are also generally quite safe to be in for anyone.
Bus and train are not quite so safe from that standpoint, and the stations for those modes of transportation are sometimes in less desirable areas of a city.
Hitchhiking is very dangerous, though I do not know of any specific statistics about deaths. YOu just never know what kind of a person is stopping to pick you up.
So - what do you mean?
