michigan unemployment register for work?

my boyfriend was only laid off from his job, he is collecting unemployment but has a return to work date from his employer for the beginning of april (he does landscaping) does he still need to be applying for work? i feel like he doesn't, because it'd be kind of silly if he accepted a job only to go back to his landscaping job in a couple months. i just can't find any straigh answers & of course the inquiry line is always disconnecting him.
