why doesnt a split outlet work on the switch?
i changed a outlet the bottom of it is a split outlet i changed it and now the switch dont work on it?
ok thank you i figured it out i didnt have the tab broke off i didnt know that needed to be dont and do it need to do it on both sides?

Break off the tab that connects to two outlets together where the connection screws are along the side of the outlet. You should only break off the tab on the black (hot) wire side. Indicated by the brass colored screws. The white wire side is a common wire and it is OK for the two outlets to share that common return wire.

Do you mean both outlets are always hot? If so, did you break off the little tabs to separate the upper and lower receptacles?

You need to break off the link of the 'hot' side so that it can operate independent of the steady power of the other receptacle above or below it. Otherwise it will still feed the light or whatever else the switch controls.
