What happened with the months?

September - prefix means "7" but its the 9th month

October - prefix is "8" ...10th month

November - prefix is "9"...11th month

December - prefix is "10"... 12th month

What's up with that?

I assume they added a few months over time, but assumedly we had only 10 months previously? Why the change?

    Julius Caesar fancied a moth so he got July;

    Augustus fancied a month so he got August. This pushed the other months a month ahead. You'll notice that they nicked the best two.

    September actually was the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 46 BC, when January and February were added as a division of a monthless winter period and the first month changed from March to January.

    I think it had to do with how two or three Roman emperors decided to make months and name them after themselves. They were..... charismatic like that. :P
