They would just abandon the store then. They want you to think that you are getting a bargain.

If it's free, they're not selling it, they're giving it away.
They had to pay money to get the goods into the store. If they give it away, they lose all of that money.
They will keep reducing prices. At some point, they will no longer be making a profit. When they reduce prices below the breakeven point, they're reducing the amount of heir loss.
