Why doesn't God punish mankind by making them do painting and decorating for a week?
It must be a worse punishment than sending them to Hell for an eternity..

Actually you are quite correct; painting and decorating is a real chore for those who dislike it, whilst Hell's fire is make believe; i.e, to make (force) one believe in a God who doesn't actually exist.
