Dalmatians were breed to run with horses to keep them calm. Back in the day firefighters used old wagons which were horsedrawn. Some horses would get spooked on the site of a fire so firefights brought along the athletic, energetic, but purpose drawn dalmatian to run with them and keep them calm on site.

They are easy to train for this and lots of fire stations use them for their fire fighting dogs.
