Car cranks but won't turn over?

2000 Mustang V6. I had no problem until I went to pick my kids up at their babysitter's house. Got the kids in my car, started the car, then it began to shudder and stalled out. Now car cranks but doesn't turn over. The coil tests okay. When I push in the schrader valve on the fuel rail, I get nothing. The IFS switch button is still down. I can't tell if the pump primes when the car is on. It was never that loud to begin with. I'm about to get the car towed back to my house so I can jack it up and test the pump power and replace the fuel filter. Any other suggestions?

First, what does IFS mean? Is that the Emergency Fuel Shut-off Switch? If it's down, it's not suppose to be.

Second, how did you test the coil, with a voltmeter? Did it meet the specifications?

Third, when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? If it's been more than 30K miles, that's probably the problem. You should pray it didn't ruin the fuel pump.

Discontinued Mustang engine owner, When an engine turns over it's also cranking. Both terms mean the same thing!

It's time for a trusted private mechanic to test the fuel pressure in the fuel rail pressure fitting. IF the fuel pump is providing pressure, you'll have it for only seven seconds when the key is one click before the start position. It will continue IF the engine starts.

Hun, listen what you've said: The engine will crank and crank but not turn over. If your motor cranks over it means the crankshaft IS turning over. You have an electronic ignition problem, not a starter problem. I hate to say it but a roll back trip to the Nissan dealer is necessary.

Well MR.AWESOME you do NOT need a fuel filter QA dirty fileter will just SLWO The car donw on the highway,NOT prevent starting. Many NEWER cars now only have ONE fuel line and NO replaceable filter at all. FORD began using this a few years ago. You MIGHT have a bad FUEL PUMP< but get a friend to "LISTEN" at BOTH fenders when you turn engine to the ON (nto start) position. If they hear a WHIRRING sound for a half second, then the PUMP is working. ASLO you have a FUEL PUMP REALY! it is possible but not likely that CORROSION has buillt up on it. >>>OPEN YOUR HOOD>> and check for signs of SALT ERROSION On wires and near batrtery and battery bales. I ALWAYS recommend that engine be washed down at leats THREE times each year to preclude the formation of RUST and corrosion on vital wiring harnesse, and to check for ANY fluid leaks. A clean engine will tell you EVERYTHING! YOu hae an ECU and a FUEL PUMP DRIVER box in that car and perhpas THAT is what is wrong with it. DIRT ina HARNESS or street corrsion is possible.

cranking and turning over is the same thing ! if you mean it will crank but won,t start then it could be a clogged fuel filter ! if you don,t get no gas when you push on the valve on the fuel rail then change the fuel filter, it could be stopping the gas from getting to the engine or you might have a bad fuel regulator on the fuel rail !

You have a bad fuel pump or your out of fuel. Try tapping on the bottom of the tank with a wooden tool, it may be stuck(the pump), then try starting it again. If it starts then plan on replacing the fuel pump and sending unit and fuel filter.....gl

If you hold your ear against the side of the car you should be able to hear the fuel pump when someone turns the key on.

    CAPTAIN,.....................CRANK, & TURN OVER...ARE THE SAME THING

IF YOU MEAN IT WONT START, CHECK FOR SPARK, & CHECK FOR FUEL PUMP PRESSURE & FUEL FILTER
