Lactose intolerance is normal in adults; it does not go away. Instead, it develops slowly beginning around adolescence. There is some individual variation in how severe it becomes, but more than 90% of the population becomes lactose-intolerant in adulthood.

Sometimes eating or drinking lactose can encourage more tolerance to develop, but often this has no effect. There are pills you can take with meals to help you digest lactose if you are intolerant.
