DVR box still runs even when powered of?

I am new to having this dvr/cable box and found that the hard drive or w/e was still running long after I turned it off, and it was definitely off because there where no lights other than the time showing. So it was warm. Is this normal? Or is there a way to keep it from doing so if it is a problem?

The noise you can hear is the cooling fan and this is quite normal.

Even though it's doing it all night and it's warm?

    Yes, the DVR staying on is very normal for provider DVRs.
