I want to move to Sydney, and need some advice?
I currently live in the Central West of New South Wales, and I want to move to the city to pursue a career in music at the end of the year. I am 18, and I am a guitarist and want to join/form a band but I need some advice on how to get an apartment and a job in Sydney. What's a good nice area that's relatively cheap rent ($250 p/w max) and where could I get a job? I'm currently employed here in the Central West, and am looking for a part time job so I can focus on music. When and where would be the best time to apply and move down? I really need to get out of this small town as I am not satisfied and I need to broaden my horizons. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I don't really mean in CBD, sorry should've clarified. I don't mind any travel. Any nice suburbs with cheap rent? I was looking at Matraville and Castle Hill. Only looking for one bedroom apartments etc.

At the moment your only hope of a musical career is busking around the Opera house, and living under the nearby railway bridge. if you really want a carreer, either send a demo to a recording company, or approach the Symphony Orchestra for a position.

Sad but true mate, no ''apartment'', even a tiny one bedder will be going for $250 a week. Granny flats are going for more than that. Then there is water, power, gas and groceries. Not to mention, furniture and appliances and at 18 --do you own all that already? Fridge, washing machine, bed, linen, cutlery, pots , pans etc etc. Vacuum cleaner TV , stereo, lounge suite, coffee table, chest of drawers for your clothes?Hm-mmm, starting to look a whole lot different huh?Even if you have all that, how are you getting it all to Sydney? Own a van or big Ute maybe?Getting it here by removalist will cost you a lot.
Then, what part time job is an 18 year old getting that will pay enough for all this? 18's only get youth rates, and part time you will be lucky to get ANY job, let alone one paying enough for this life style you want.
Being harsh on you? > NO. Just letting you know the realities of the ''Big Smoke''
It would help if you dropped the ''apartment'' theory and become prepared to share a flat with others. It is a whole lot cheaper, the place will probably have all the gear like fridge etc and you can come and go as the need takes you. Have you ANY idea how much in advance Sydney Landlords are asking for? 4 weeks bond, 2 weeks in advance, and a letting fee normally equal to 2 weeks rent. Then, bonds from the Electric and water companies--if you have no payment record with these Utility companies, a bond of several hundred dollars each will apply.But--just how many Sydney Landlords do you think are going to hand over their expensive investment property to an 18 year old kid working (maybe) part time and from the Bush?
Mate, I am afraid it is pretty well stacked against you there. Not many owners will trust a young 18 yr old with their unit/flat/apartment unless it is mum and dads or close relatives place. Sydney Landlords?? Not a chance mate.Go on Gumtree and look up share accommodation. Or search the net for shares. Sydney has lots of sites for that on the net. Register with a recruitment company. Many specialise like hospitality or blue collar etc, just punch into the browser what you may like and get at least an idea of positions available and pay rates. But for 18 year olds mate, even full time work you will only be taking home say $4oo max. Trust me mate, you cant rent a place on your own in Sydney for that. --unless you know how to survive without eating, or using electricity or gas that is.?
Gumtree for you mate ! So--as I said, Im NOT being harsh, just waking you up to some realities. Anyone sugar coats it and replies you can do all you want is a total dreamer and simply dont beleive them. Nothing worse than false hope.

I just did a search and there were only two properties in all of Sydney for $250 or under, and they were awful. You will need to share accommodation, Sydney is unaffordable for a single unless they have a good income. I'd suggest you perhaps take a look at the Parramatta area on http://www.gumtree.com.au,/ there are loads of share places for under $250, or the Hornsby area which is nicer but a longer commute to the city. Both suburbs are packed with shops which should give plenty of job opportunities.

Not from there but Sydney CBD is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. I don't think you would find anything for even close to $250/week. How far out would you not mind travelling?

A place for $250 a week? Yeah right. The cheapest will be at least $300, and it will be along the lines of being a granny flat. I suggest you look into getting a house share, especially when you have no previous rental history.

not to burst your bubble...BUT...!!!
to find what you want for the price you want well... good luck... buy a lottery ticket more chance of winning
also consider that the rental market is highly competitive and property managers will always give preference to somebody with good rental referances and good employment references and working
as for $250 max one bedroom golly gosh make that two lottery tickets
so what to do to get out of small town save as much money as you can come down and even if you have to stay at the Y or a backpackers then get a job... then when you know where you will be working... find a share house situation close by your work to reduce travel time and cost... that is your ONLY rental option at this point in time... then later much later when you have references you might might be lucky to get a place of your own BUT you will pay much more than $250... for example my son has a one bed UNFURNISHED bachelor pad pays $420... that is what happens if you want to be on your own and not in a share situation you pay for the privelige...!!!
now another option don't know if you have considered but just north of sydney up the freeway is the area known as Central Coast and Gosford is the main commercial centre... the number of our most well known musicians and in particular country singers and guitar players etc that is where they live because as you know musicians don't make lots of money until they get famous/rich and being that it is only an hour up the freeway you can do a gig in sydney and then jump on the freeway... another option for you... obviously you would require a vehicle

as to best time... well that would be when you have money in your pocket to leave with
