Shanghai or Xi'an?

Hi everyone!

This summer, I have the fortune of studying abroad in China. I'm in the payment process right now, and I need to make a decision to go to Xi'an or not.

The study abroad program is one that travels all over China. We'll be spending time in Chengdu, Hong Kong, Ningbo, and Beijing. During one of the weekends in Ningbo, we have an excursion to either Shanghai (free) or Xi'an ($500 extra).

I have no idea if Xi'an is worth the extra money. I would love the opportunity to visit another area of China - I've been a huge travel buff since I was young, and I never get the opportunity to travel to China. In your opinion, is Xi'an worth the extra $500, energy to travel there from Ningbo (the program is very intense and exhausting), and bypassing Shanghai?

Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it.

Xi'an will give you a much better perspective of genuine Chinese culture. Shanghai is heavily influenced by and populated with foreigners. If you want to experience culture and history, choose Xi'an. If you want to party, go to Shanghai.

Shanghai is a famous global metropolis drawing more and more attention from all over the earth; so see what that town is offering with hotelbye . Shanghai is a well known vacation location for visitors. In Shanghai you can see the wonderful Yu Garden (Yù Yuán), also called the Garden of Happiness. This Garden covers a place in excess of 20,000 square meters and consists of an outer and an interior garden. The oldest area may be the Outer Garden with further changes being made in the 18th century when Sansui Tang, the park's main hall, was added. The newer and much smaller Inner Garden appointments from 1709 and involves characteristics typical of a classical Chinese writer's Garden: beautiful little pavilions, ornamental rocks, and little mountain stages, splitting surfaces and small wetlands, and even a richly designed theatrical stage.

Xi'an is so worth it! I spent about 6 weeks there two years ago and it is my favorite place in the world. The Muslim district is fantastic and the food is just beyond belief. I'm sure Shanghai is also amazing but Xi'an is so open and friendly and not gigantic and crazy like the bigger cities.

If you get a chance to climb Huashan you should for sure take it. It's hard by so rewarding.

The Big Wild Goose pagoda is my hands down favorite. It's so peaceful and beautiful and at night they have a water lights show that is a lot of fun.

If you have the additional funds, I suggest you go to Xi'An, because it is not "just another coastal metropolis," and you'll be able to see some interesting scenery along way to/from it.

I would suggest you to visit Xian if you want to get knowledge of the history of China. Xian is has been China's ancient capital for many dynasties which Beijing can not match...
