What happens if you run out of the cleaner for your piercing?

I just got my second holes pierced and cartilage, yesterday at Pagoda. They gave a small cleaner bottle, for 3 piercings. The lady told me to keep my cartilage in for 12 weeks and second hole 8 and use the cleaner. I doubt I will have any more left by then. Is there something else I can use? Does it matter if the cleaner runs out?

There are so many alternatives,no worries. It is okay if the cleaner runs out. They are not really important since there are alot of other methods. The only difference between the methods and the cleaner is the price.

The cleaner you are having is basically a saline solution. So you can replace it with other saline solutions. Google around, you will know what I am talking about. Saline solutions are basically salt solutions. Wound wash solution, eyedrops or even contact lens solution are considered saline. Wound wash solution is basically the safest and the best. You can get them in first aid kits and any pharmacies. Eyedrops are okay too. If you wanna use contact lens saline solution, make sure it is saline with NO ALCOHOLS at all. And do not use the multipurpose contact cleaner solution as well ( It has alcohol and preservative ) . Use only saline one.

You can do your own saline solution. Sea salt soak is what it is called. Google on that and you will get good reviews. Mix 1/8 tablespoon with hot water and let it all dissolve. Do not put too much salt as it will dry out your skin. And do not use table salt, at all, because table salt had iodine and it has a risk of infection ( i had experience with it ). Sea salt is more pure and is better for healing and cleaning fresh puncture wounds like piercing.

You can get sea salt in all grocery and department store and its cheap like table salt. This sea salt soak is the safest, proven to be the best ( prevents infection and cleans bacteria ) and works for everybody. Soak your piercing for five minutes in it. Or use a cotton swab, soak it in the sea salt solution and rub it around your piercing to clean the area. A q-tip is okay too.

Do not use alcohols like hydrogen peroxide or neosprin. They will dry out your skin terribly and cause itch. It does not work for everybody and it is risky because if it does not go along with you, you might develop an infection.

Remember to clean your piercings twice a day ( not more, you will dry out the area ) and avoid touching it with your bare hands as you will be transfering dirt from your hands onto the piercing.

You really should have gotten pierced by a real professional piercer....please find a reputable one in your area and have them put in high quality & sterile jewelry that is proper for unhealed piercings. The ear rings used at Pagoda suck.

Throw away the crappy antiseptic they gave you. You need to be doing sea salt soaks twice a day for 5-10 minutes each soak with 1/4th of a teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt to 8oz of hot water. Double or triple it (if necessary) in a clean mug and then tilt your head to get your ear into the solution to soak it. You want to actually soak it, don't use q-tips or cotton balls.

Lobes take 2-3 months to heal completely and helix (cartilage) piercings typically take 6-12 months to heal when done properly and can take longer when done with a piercing gun. You need to leave them alone aside from the sea salt soaks the entire healing time. And if they told you to twist or rotate the jewelry, don't do that. Doing that drags in crust and bacteria and tears up the inside of the piercing.

Please get pierced by a professional piercer in the future...
