The average user doesn't even need Java. There are a few websites that require it (Minecraft for instance) but for the most part, most don't. If you want to know if you need it, then disable it for a few days and see how many sites you can't get in to.

while it could, in theory, be replaced, Java is embedded in many websites and is used by a plethora of other programs as well.

Since so many apps, programs, and electronic devices use it, I would say it is both necessary and useful.

Yes. Not only is it in computers, but cars, big screens, phones, tablets, cameras, etc.
