Gateway laptop netbook How to enable wifi?

I turn the wifi switch on but nothig happens. How do you enable the wifi connection. I'm using windows 7

    is the driver for the wireless lan installed? did you try to click the connection bars by the clock and click the connection you want to use and enter the passphrase? Simply turning the swithc on doesn't give you internet, there is more involved.
