George Lucas originally conceived the idea of a space opera in the form of what later became Star Wars, Episode 4.

In 1977, at the time of its initial release, is was just entitled Star Wars. The added "Episode IV" came only after the success of the movie, enabling Lucas to produce 2 sequels (episodes 5 & 6), but also conceiving the idea of going back in the original timeline, thus establishing that this original Star Wars would become Episode 4.

After completing episode 6, The Return Of The Jedi, Lucas started working on episodes 1-3, but realized the technology wasn't developed enough for his concept, so he waited more years until the time was right to make the prequels.

And yes, you can start watching them from 1 to 6. It will give you a fuller idea on the whole concept, but I still prefer to watch the original trilogy first (4-6) and then the prequels (1-3)

The overall story was well mapped out in the beginning. But at the time (mid 70's) the technology supported just filming in the middle of the total story, so Lucas started with Leia and young Luke Skywalker (the 4th episode of the 2-trilogy movie set). It does look a little odd these days, and there were drugs available, but in reality it is just that.

it's partly because back in 1977 they didn't have the technology to create the kinds of worlds that Lucas depicted in the story for episode 1 to 3. he wanted to wait until he felt it was possible to film 1 to 3 in the way he wanted to.

It's because they wanted to tell the story of Darth Vader after the original 3

The writer thought it would be best to write the last three firsrt so that when he wrote the first three, he would be able to include much more detail to support the last three

maybe a different generation? i dunno i know theyre films are backwards so if you was to watch them finish to start they make sense.
