My teacher keeps passing me and referring me in purpose when i deserve at least a merit.I work so hard at my?

I am doing a level 3 at college at the moment , There's students that can not speak English but yet she gives them good grades, but when it comes to me she always criticise me and my work, she will always try and find something to comment on so she will make me lose my mark. I am not getting any help from this college within my dyslexia no extra time to do my work and no personal tutor.

and yet I hired a personal tutor to explain things to me.

But this teacher is the only one who always marks me down, we had to provide a list of our weaknesses and strengths and as simple as it is, she still gave me a pass! she does not want me to achieve the grades to attend university.

what are the steps that I can take, and she does discriminate against students as I have it recorded it in my recorder, during lessons I have to record so I can get back to it when it comes to my studies.

Please Help me within this matter as she is playing within my future!

as all my teachers saw my work and gave me good grades, She's the only one who would try and mess things for me. for no reason.!

Thank you

Does the college have a DLO (Disability Liaison Officer) or similar?

If so go and see them and ask for help, they can provide you a tutor who can help you (hopefully someone who has a good understanding on dyslexia and how to help you).

Access to a lap top or computer with specialized programs installed which can help students with learning disorders.

The DLO can also speak to the teacher/lectures on your behalf and ensure you are getting the support you deserve which should include extra time for exams/tests.

Request that class handouts are either sent to you via email or they have it printed off in Comic Sans Serf size 14 font (dyslexic friendly text).

Note taker in class to take not for you, or ask a fellow student to take note for you

And other strategies to help you.

Tape recorder - which you mentioned you have which is one very small concession.

One of the key things to help us is have a good understanding of how the dyslexia affects you, so you can have specific strategies put into help you.

As Ray said no matter what country your in, you must provide evidence that you have a disability physical, sensory, learning or other disorders. This is to ensure that you are given the correct support needed, and without this evidence the college does not have to provide you with anything.

You could try speaking to this teacher privately, just to make sure she know you have dyslexia, especially if the college is aware of your being dyslexic, it might help if you give her some information about dyslexia, highlighting the area's that is specific to you, you could also give her a list of strategies to help you. If she refuses to listen to you, then speak to the DLO or some other person higher up the ladder.

I am dyslexic and when I was studying to become a youth & disability support worker I had to provide the college that I was indeed dyslexic, and had an acquired disability, so I was granted a number of supports, such as note taker & tutor who would proof read my work, and type for me if necessary, the teachers/lectures were asked to send class note out to me via email, or have the class notes printed on cream paper, ready for me, try to leave the notes on the wall for awhile, or the teacher/lecture write each paragraph in a different colour, rather than black on white. The college also helped in purchasing a computer program called TextHelp read & write gold, which was a huge help, especially when my note taker & tutor were not available. I was also allowed extra time for test/exams and if needed extra time to get my assignments etc in.

Most of my fellow students were very supportive, as was my main teachers/lectures who would go out of their way to ensure I was given the support I needed. Because I have trouble with spelling homophone words, one lecture would underline the word, but not deduct points for spelling, because the I had the right word, just the wrong spelling lol.

My daughter is also dyslexic too.

I am guessing you are doing a BTEC National Diploma course in the UK.

For such courses the college must have an Internal Verification system in place.

This means it must have a means of checking the assessments set for appropriateness and also a system for checking the grading of work.

BTEC will also sample graded work via an External Verification process.

I am sorry if all this sounds technical but the bottom line is that the college should be operating systems which prevent individual lecturers doing what you claim to be the case.

    What can you do ?

Well, someone in the college will be responsible for your course - a course leader/manager.

You should make an appointment to see him/her and express your concerns and back this up with any hard evidence you feel you have, such as samples of your graded work.

You could also take advice from the college's student counsellor service.

As regards your dyslexia, did you declare it on your enrolment form ? If so then the college must offer you help.

Again you could adopt either if the two courses of action outlined above.

Finally it is not uncommon for students to feel a sense of injustice over grading but be careful what you wish for.

Holding your assessments up for independent scrutiny could result in your grades going down not up, because the independent scrutineers might think your lecturer has been unduly generous to you.

There are several strategies that you may use to influence this teacher. One of them is give her a teacher's card saying how nice it is that you have her as your teacher. Make it a rose and that may soften her heart on your behalf. Ask if you could be of any help to her because you want to be a teacher. See if she wants help after school if you can still get home with others. Good luck.
