Why are the Republicans trying to kill the Post Office?

The Republicans created the 2006 law called the "Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act" (PAEA) that mandates pre-funding the postal service retiree health care and pension benefits for 75 years — something that no other government agency or private company is forced to do.

85% of the budget red ink comes from this pre-funding mandate despite the fact that, according to the post office Inspector General, the pension is over-funded and reserves for retiree health care are far higher than the federal government as a whole, the military and almost all Fortune 1000 companies.

And this from the anti healthcare, anti union, anti benefits party. What is their real motive?

Could it be that their unions have been ripping us off for decades? Like their jobs need rocket science workers to do what they do?

-3/31/10, postalemployeenetwork.com: “Postmaster Potter has made headway in reducing work hours and the costs of benefits and pensions, but the average postal employee still makes $83,000 in salary and benefits a year, placing postal workers among the highest-paid government employees.”

At least a hundred billion dollars in pension obligations, and it lost at least 12 billion dollars last year! May be it's time to let the dinosaur die!

You are off the wall. The post office has been losing money since its inception and the government has been supporting it.
