Problems with Windows 8?

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8. It's driving me crazy. It seems almost as if the computer does things on its own without me doing anything. Biggest problem is that the print is so so so tiny that I can barely see it on my email page and when on messenger, it keeps switching to one or another size fonts, removing bolds etc. Has anyone else had this trouble? I am one of those idiots who should never be turned loose with a computer. Not very good at it although was doing just fine with my old desktop with XP

Got the laptop so I could go wireless...but beginning to wonder if I could buy XP and just hang up windows 8. Is this possible and will my programs still run. Have 20 megs service.

Update:

I thank the one person who answered. Their suggestion was appropriate. HOWEVER...my son, an IT tech provided me with a much simpler solution...thought I would share it here for everyone's benefit.

To enlargel the text, simply enlarge the screen slightly. While pressing the CONTROL key...use the wheel on the mousel to either enlarge or make smaller. Some apps will automatially pick it up, others you will have to do the same procedure while on the app...but once done...it stays until you change it. Took me all of three seconds to fix a problem that had me ready to throw out a wonderful new laptop.

I imagine the first problem is app switching. To disable it, Win + I to open the Settings charm > Change PC settings > General > turn off "When I swipe from the left edge, switch directly to my most recent app."

Windows 8 lets you use gestures on the trackpad of your laptop. Here's a list so you know what they do and don't trigger them by accident.

To make text bigger in you web browser, hold the Ctrl key and press the + button. Zoom out with Ctrl + -, and to reset zoom Ctrl + 0.

Windows XP is so old know that manufacturers no longer write drivers for the OS. Even if you could install XP, it won't run very well.
