How to save as .docx if i don't have word?

I use Microsoft Works to type up papers for school. But nobody opens files with the .wps format that works uses. I know it has the option to save it as .doc or .docx if you have even just a trial of word; but i don't. So how can i save as a .docx without word?

Works is a very old word processor. It has the option to save as a Word doc file (even if Word is not installed), but not the newer docx format. Word has a free download that allows older versions of Word (2000-2003) to open the new docx documents, Works does not.

OpenOffice and LibreOffice will open the newer docx format documents but will save only in the older doc format (Word 97-2003). LibreOffice will open documents in Works format that even Word will not open. Because of security Word will no longer open Works documents created in older versions of Works.

I would suggest you use the free LibreOffice. http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

EDIT: Word Starter was only available on new PC's. It was not available as a download. If you download it, it is not an authorized site and it may not work, or worse, you may have problems.

Stop using the crude MS Works or Wordpad. You can get a one-time 60-day trial version of MS Office 2010 for free here:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/

If you cannot afford to buy a license for MS Office after it expires, use Office Starter 2010:

    http://www.downloadcrew.com/article/26083-microsof...

It is a cut-down version of the package and only contains limited versions of Word and Excel. It doesn't have Powerpoint. It contains ads but in exchange you can use it free of charge and without a product key.

This version appears rather basic and has fewer ribbon tabs. For instance References, Review and View are all missing. But even though cut down there's still more than enough functionality there for many people. If you're only looking for a capable, free word processor and spreadsheet application and you don't need Powerpoint or anything else then Office Starter 2010 is well worth considering.

Now if you need to have Powerpoint then either you buy the full version of MS Office or use the free alternative called LibreOffice which has Writer, Calc and Impress. These 3 are compatible with Word, Excel and Powerpoint, respectively. You can create/open/edit/save in MS Office format so you don't have to worry about compatibility with your original MS Office documents. Here's the link:

Another option if you're in college is the Office 365 University subscription which gives a full version of Office 2013 for 80.00 for four years.
