Just wondering what the fastest car in the world is?

Your question is soooo vague - define 'fastest' please. Top-speed, acceleration, fastest-lap of a given track, fastest 1/4 mile drag-strip performance? Standard, modified, racing, or purpose-built one-off to break a given record?
Not enough information there, sorry.
Oh, and though the Ariel Atom with the V8 engine is geared to pull 'only' about 175mph, it will out-accelerate and out-corner and out-brake virtually everything out there whilst doing so. AND the ridiculous Veyron is beset with the problem of RAMPANT fuel-consumption, because of it's LUDICROUS weight. It has been detailed that the fuel-tanks empty in under 12 minutes when the car is being driven fast - so after just some 50 miles or so, you would have to pull in to a conveniently-placed petrol station, exit the car, pump 140 litres of fuel, pay for it, get back into the car, accelerate back up to speed, and 12 minutes later, do that all again! Meanwhile, something as mundane as a slippery Audi with a turbo-diesel engine can maintain a much higher AVERAGE speed, pulling a few hundred miles of range from its' tank. Tortoise and the Hare fable, all over again.
Veyrons are ugly, fat, heavy, and they suck. And an Ultima GTR is WAY quicker around the Top-Gear test-track.

You stated to rely 'non-street authorized automobiles,' so technically it's Thrust SSC, a twin turbofan powered land-bound missile with a pilot that went 763 mph at Black Rock in 1997 and broke the sound barrier in the method. The final wheel-driven car to maintain the Land speed file used to be the Sommers Brothers' Goldenrod, which ran 409 mph on Utah's Bonneville Salt Falts in 1965. It used to be on display for a very long time on the Peterson Museum in l. A.. Regardless of claims made in behalf of a quantity of cars that have yet to be obvious, a lot much less driven by way of unbiased testers, the quickest vehicle that you could purchase to be used on public roads is the €1.0M Bugatti Yeyron, which has been clocked at 253 mph. You need to flip a special key to lock the suspension down and the aerodynamic aids in a less drag-inducing configuration, and if you flip the wheel too sharply, all of them go back to the default setting, limiting top speed to a mere 234 mph. For those who hurry, there are nonetheless a few production slots available.
