I becan watching the series from season 5 and i'm currently halfway through season 6. A lot of people through history seems to know the doctor, how? Is he really that old? Also, how does people contact the doctor for help?

he just meets people, we really don't know the Doctor's age, 11 claims to be over 1100, but I think he is so old he has forgotten. The 2nd Doctor said he was in his 400's, the 3 claimed to be 1000's of year old, 4 said 750, 6 said 900, but 9 also said he was 900 so who really knows. In the new series they contact him usually by phone, in the old series he just showed up were the TARDIS took him
