Dell pc owners--do you have to buy?
official Dell parts or is that just what they hope you will do since they say to use Dell parts only?

No, with recent Dells any parts will do.
Older Dells had proprietary power supplies (BTX form factor) which were hard to replace, and some motherboards even had pins switched, but those days are gone.

You do not have to buy official Dell Parts. Of course if you break something by putting in a "oem part", take it out before calling warranty support and don't mention you had put it in :)
