Are there any safe parts of Mexico for European tourists to visit?

Hi guys, I'm considering taking a month to six weeks off work to do a bit of travel and I've always wanted to go to South America, primarily Mexico.

Are there any safe parts of Mexico for foreigners? I know that the cartels compete one another to be labeled the most violent organization and that they target foreigners because we aren't expendable like Mexican nationals are and as a result it makes bigger news headlines. I'm a pretty handsome European guy: blue eyes, soft white skin and generally fair features. I'm worried that I'll stick out like a sore thumb over there and be targeted.

I really don't want to end up being fed to Lazcano's tigers, captured by the Los Zetas and decapitated by a chainsaw, or burnt alive in a ten gallon oil drum by the Gulf Cartel. I know that the police are all in with the cartels, completely corrupt and so is the government. Please recommend safe parts of Mexico, if there are any left.

By the fears you have expressed I think you see too much Fox News and visit too much BlogDelNarco.com

Most touristic places are pretty safe, as long as you keep out of problematic places like brothels or look for drugs, etc.

Actually you are right that there are some cities that have seen increase in violence, I would be more careful while visiting states like Guerrero (where Acapulco is), Michoacan (Morelia, Ixtapa), and the border states with U.S. specially Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Chihuahua.

I think you still can go to those places, but just be careful, avoid going to lonely places, or walk on the street late at night, if you take a taxi be sure that it is a licensed one (there are special places where they park), etc. Keep your photo or video camera hidden. In general mexicans are very friendly to foreigners and you can trust people, but be mistrustful when people offer you strange things, like free or illegal stuff.

    Good Luck!

First, Mexico is not in South America. It is in North America, just south of the U.S. border. Next, most of Mexico is quite safe. Avoid border cities...but they are not of interest to tourists anyway. You can go to Mexico City, Queretaro, other colonial cities in the center of Mexico, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and all of the Yucatan Peninsula. There are over one million Americans, many Canadians , and many Europeans living in Mexico...we are just fine. If you have noting to do with drugs and dealers, they will have nothing to do with you. Why would the cartels have any interest in YOU? Are you competition for them? Are you rich so your family would pay ransom for you? Do you go around telling people that? Are you involved in law enforcement? Or are you a normal person who will be simply visiting in Mexico? Cartels have no interest in you if you have no interest in them. Mexico is full of handsome guys...many with fair skin and blue eyes. Looks like you have the common ( but wrong) impression that all Mexicans are dark skinned and therefore unattractive. Not true. Many Mexicans look like their European ancestors. And we have many American and European residents and tourists here all the time. The cartels do not target tourists. The great majority of Mexico is safe for you to visit. Many tourists come and are amazed at what a WRONG impression they had from the media. come, be humble and courteous and you wil be amazed at how kind and friendly the people are and how beautiful the country is.

My White father and I were in various Yucatan communities for weeks and never saw reason to fear. Drug gangsters are mostly gunning for each other, not for foreign tourists, and they're active along the northern border and a few other places (e.g. Acapulco), not in the whole country.

If you're worried about being kidnapped, just don't flash any fancy jewelry or watches.

P.S. Mexico is nowhere close to South America, though it's in what's considered Latin America.

i hate it when people are so ignorant....

1)first off,Mexico is in north America

    2) the media makes Mexico looks bad when the reality is that it is not

3)Mexico has a lot of safety

4)i wouldn't recommend you going since you obviously know nothing about it,research more and stop listening to all the negativity

IS NOT safe for Europeans only if your skin is a bit brown but if you are white stay away, drug cartel would shot you as soon as you get out from the airport because they would know you are not charito (mexicanito) or if you wanna make them confuse use a mexican hat and mustache and should be fine ;) ah and I forgot go to the local store and buy some guns and riffle in case somebody knows that you are European

Why are you asking Filipinos this question? I concept you have been smarter than asking a question like this. Are you bragging about affording a 1 month trip or are you bragging about your sons physique and appearance or both? I doubt if any one right here cares about what happens in Mexico with your son or the French woman you mention.
