Test came back negative for strep but positive for bacteria infection; what do I have then?

My doctors office called and said that it was negative for strep but the test did come back positive for bacteria....what other things, bacteria wise, could be causing my sore throat? The amoxicillin has been working.

Strep is only one of numerous bacteria that can cause you a sore throat. Fortunately, most of them are susceptible to antibiotics like the amoxicillin you are taking. They don't routinely try to grow and identify all the other sorts, simply because of the large number of them. Strep is the most worrisome, since it can have more serious complications if not treated. The others, not so much. What counts is that you are feeling better with the amoxicillin, and should be pretty well cured of whichever nasty little bacteria buggie caused your trouble by the time you finish your medication.
