NEW! 'Older couple wanted for Mars mission' - what do you make of this!?

Well, I didn't see this coming, but it's a fine idea in my view. Interesting that they specifically want a long-term couple to reduce adverse psychological effects as much as possible. It's ambitious too - they want to get there by 2018 if funding can be found. Given that the story will attract much media attention, it might also attract the necessary contributors.

I don't really have any specific questions as such, I'm just open to your comments. Actually, I do have some specific questions: Firstly, do you like the idea? Do you think it is possible? And if so, will it be successful? Uh...and would you are your significant other volunteer for it?

Yeah, ..., I read about that. I think "they" need to rethink their strategy. Long standing space research shows that bone loss accelerates in microgravity environments. To date no human being has lasted longer than 437.7 days (~14.6 months). Older folks already have issues with bone loss, couple that with accelerated bone loss in space, threat of interstellar radiation, radiation from our own sun and the lack of exercise? I doubt they'd make it back alive.

Besides who would want to drink their own urine for 5 years straight? Bleeech!

Personally, I'd love to go but the architects of this plan need to think things through a little better. Else, all they're going to get back in 5 years is a capsule of decaying flesh.

such a mission could be invaluable before risking returning rock samples.

but i was surprised some answerers envisage a return trip.

    i couldnt do it myself.

It reminds me of how when they couldn't get enough shielding on the Atomic Plane, they considered using older pilots.
