Is a cashier's check legitimate in this situation?
I am selling my used car on eBay for $2500 with a buy it now option of $3000. I am from central Wisconsin and a buyer from Los Angeles contacted me and would like to pay with a cashier's check for the buy it now price. He/she has been a member of eBay for 2 months and has no feedback. This is their message:
I will issue out a cashier check for the buy it now price of the vehicle
pls send your full name and address , can you send addtional pictures to me.

There are a lot of stolen (so they are no good) and fake bank and cashier's checks, even USPS money orders. I remember when I went to buy a new car, paying in full (no financing), and they requested a personal check over the bank check I suggested (my bank was next door). I thought they'd never take a personal check for that much money. They told me that some of the bank and cashier's checks they receive are stolen or fake.
Almost no one will offer more for a car than they can likely buy it for, and that's what they're doing by doing the Buy it Now option.
Don't take the cashiers check and don't give them your bank number to transfer the funds. Ask your bank what is the best way to handle this.
A big problem is sometimes you can give your bank a check (of any type), and they run a quick check on it and credit your account, but the check eventually bounces in 1 to 2 weeks because it was fake or stolen and it didn't come to light until then. Then they take the value of the check out of your account, and any other accounts you have at that bank (it's in many bank contracts), and any new accounts you set up there. And then they sue you for whatever they couldn't get out of you.
Be careful!

There are lots of counterfeit check scams, including cashier's checks. While a cashier's check would be considered certified funds, it would still bounce if the check is counterfeit.
Be very leary if someone wants to give you a check for more and ask you to send money to someone else .... like the transporation company.
Frankly, I don't understand why anyone would buy a vehicle site unseen, especially when they have to transport it from Wisconsin to LA. Surely there are similar vehicles available locally.

Oh, this is a scam.
Cashier's check is 100% fake.
Just because you are not paranoid, does not mean they are not out to get you.
Only do transactions in person.
No if's, and's, or but's.
You do not know how many people have come in crying in here over this scam.
There will be future emails about someone else picking it, etc, etc.
Don't be naive and gullible. Don't be a victim.

Cashiers checks are the same as cash pretty much. They have to fork over the cash first to get a cashiers check printed out. As far as releasing the car beforehand, don't do that. Make sure you receive that check first then ship off the car.
