How to pick up choreography quicker? (If you can)?

Hi!

I'm moving up to senior hiphop class, and I was wondering, are there any ways I can pick up choreography quicker? Because they learn dances much quicker, and I think I might get left behind.

Thank you SO much if you answer!

Picking up choreography comes with practice. You'll get better at it the more you do it. What works for one dancer won't for another, you have to figure out what kind of learner you are so you know what will work for you. It comes with time. The more you take class the better you get! Here are some things that might help:

    - picture yourself doing it in your head. Imagine yourself dancing the choreography over and over, it really works!

    - Listen to the song, match moves to the words. If you know you fan kick on a certain word and then chaine on another word. You'll have the choreography remembered just by the song.

    - Make noises. Ever been in a dance class with a teacher who speaks in sounds instead of English haha! Choreographers do it all the time. Instead of trying to remember the steps, remember sounds that go with the steps. Sometimes I'm going over choreography with my friends and ill say "it's boom boom Ba da woosh boom" it makes perfect sense!

-Think of words that remind you of the steps. One time I took a class from a teacher (like 4 years ago but I won't forget!) who would call steps random words that sort of reminded him of the steps. By the end of the class, part of the combo was "ice cream, turn, dead bug, fire" I know exactly what the moves were, but it makes no sense to anybody that wasn't in the class! Associate moves with words, you can even tell a story if you want, it only has to make sense to you!

-mark the moves as much as possible. While the other group is dancing, mark the steps. Mark the moves in any down time you have, at any possible moment during the class to get it into your memory.

    Hope this helps :)

My only suggestion is to get into class more (if possible). The best way to pick up choreography faster is just doing it more. During the first few classes in the senior hip hop class, you might pick it up a little slower but you'll get much faster as you keep taking class.

    Good luck!

Another way you can practice it at home but just mark it but make it really BIG because then when you are doing it full out it will make it look good as you will be actually going full out and not really stiff this is a way you could get an award too
