Rote learning is memorizing. You can remember your 1-5 multiplication tables to help you with hard, more complicated, every day tasks such as balancing a checkbook, buying items at a store, or knowing how many days are left until the big TV cliffhanger.

Rote-learning enables you to find answers without thinking about them. It is useful in many school school subjects, dates, equations, spellings,.... It is no help in things that need logic to solve. For a start, you should know by rote that an infinitive follows 'does'. As in 'How does rote-learning help.'

For some things there is no alternative to memorization: multiplication tables, alphabet, trig functions, periodic table, decimal equivalents of common fractions, historical dates.
