What is a comfortable income for living in Norther Virginia?
My husband, two kids and I are moving to Northern VA (Fairfax, Alexandria, areas like that) by this summer. He will be traveling a lot from Northern VA to DC. His job is starting him off at about $40,000/year but I haven't found anything yet. Combining our incomes, what is a comfortable $$$$ for a family of 4?

A minimal amount would be $75,000. That would be on the low end too. $100,000 would put you in the average area. It is just so expensive there. Housing is very expensive. Have you considered the Maryland area around DC? Your salary may go a little further.
