There are 11 or so types of dementia, including Alzheimer's, another form of dementia. These don't have the same cause and so aren't treated identically.

Aricept is sometime used to help with memory retention. Aricept is a type of drug called a cholinesterase inhibitor (also called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. This was mentioned by some one else. There are also other inhibitors that can be used. If the dementia is caused by a medical or dietary condition, treating the condition can indirectly treat the dementia. It could include an anticoagulant, antihypertensive and/or anti-cholesterol drug (statin) if it's vascular dementia secondary to stroke. Namenda is medication used to treat the specific cognitive and behavioral needs of Alzheimer's patients. Namenda is a glutamate pathway modifier. Glutamate is a chemical in the brain that is important for learning and memory. Namenda works differently than cholinesterase inhibitors. And Namenda can be paired up with Aricept (combination therapy) for better effectiveness of each. Antidepressants and antipsychotic medications are used if appropriate -- depends on the behavior displayed.

So, yes, there are medications used to improve cognition, mood and behavior, and to treat underlying conditions that cause dementia. Some forms of dementia, like Alzheimer's, is incurable. The right combination of medication can slow down the progression but it can't be stopped. If I had answered just "yes" and left it at that, you might not have been made aware of how complex dementia can be.

You didn't provide enough information. The answer for you without information is "yes and no"

Because it depends on what caused the dementia.

For instance - if the person has dementia because of untreated diabetes...unfortunately even if it is treated now it will not reverse the damage to the brain.

Dementia can be caused by poor diet and drug use as well. And a number of conditions lead to it.

More information is needed in your case.
