What's causing Java update to have Error 1316 during installation?
I'm running Windows XP, and now starting to have problems with Java updates, on two different XP systems - a netbook and a Dell PC. Never had problems updating Java before. Last week, I had a problem updating the netbook, which was solved by doing a system restore and trying again, and now I'm having the same problem with the PC, and would rather not do the system restore to try to fix it. I thought the netbook problem was due to running a registry fixer and/or changing some services startup options. But I haven't done any of that stuff to the PC. Java uninstalls itself, then tells me it can't access a file, due to a "network error," and this is all under "Error 1316."
I did a system restore back to just before this problematic update, which restores the previous version of Java, and don't want to go further back to an earlier restore point if I can avoid it.
Thanks in advance for your help with this.

Doug,
I found a fix for the error 1316 from the link below.
http://avefria.com/GAF/javafixer.org/error-1316.ht...
HOW TO FIX IT
In order to overcome Java code error 1316, you must follow one of the below mentioned steps.
Step 1: Try to download the file again after some time.
Step 2: Uninstall older versions of Java and download and install the offline version of Java.
1: Try to download the file again after some time.
Since error code 1316 states that a network error has occurred, this usually means that you tried to download the file while the Java server was too busy or when the network was congested. You should wait a little while before retrying the installation when the networks are less congested.
2: Uninstall older versions of Java and download and install the offline version of Java.
There are two methods to uninstall Java. The first is by using the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. To uninstall older versions of Java using Add/Remove Programs, follow the below listed steps:
•Click Start
•Select Settings
•Select Control Panel
•Double click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon
Another simpler way to uninstall Java is by downloading a software that helps remove old versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) called JavaRA.
However, if either of the abovementioned procedures fail, Microsoft has made available a Clean Up Utility that can get rid of all the unwanted Java registries. This Windows Installer Clean Up Utility is provided to help resolve problems for those programs that use Microsoft Windows Installer.
To use the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, do the following:
•Go to microsoft.com and download the Microsoft Installer Clean Up file to your desktop
•Start the installation process by double clicking on the file on the desktop
•After the installation process, start the Windows Install Clean Up utility
•Under the Installed products list, select the Java version to be removed
•Click Remove
•Restart the computer
After you have finished the uninstallation process, you will have to redownload the Java executable again. To do this,
•Go to Java.com
•Download j2sdk-1_4_2_05-windows-i586-p.exe
•Install the downloaded Java file
Although most people would prefer the online installation package from Java.com, numerous users have found errors being generated when using it. Hence, it is advisable to download and use the offline installation package as this is considered to be much more stable compared to the online installation process.
Thank You,
