how do the crocodilians sink and rise?

Hello, Yahoo community. I have always wondered how alligators and crocodiles sink and rise. When I was a kid, textbooks tried to tell us that it's done by swallowing stones but I never bought that. Is it accomplished by muscular contraction? Ten points await the best answer!

I think stomach stones are just an aid to grinding up food. Crocodilians rely on muscles; they just dive down and then head back up, using their tails as propulsive organs.

I remember my teacher saying that they compressed the air in their lungs, she was a dinosaur though. Don't trust my answer sorry its just what she said
