What are some good chapter books for a 10-year-old?

My boyfriend's son is in the 4th grade, and is a bit of a reluctant reader. He likes Rick Riordan's books, but he's finished them and is kind of ambivalent about finding something new to read, so his dad and I are trying to compile a list of possibilities in the hopes that one or more of them will capture his interest.

Any and all age-appropriate recommendations/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some books I enjoyed as a young boy:

    Where The Wild Fern Grows

Holes or anything by Loiu Sachar (Wayside Stories)

James and the Giant Peach or anything by Ronald Dahl really

Source(s): Former boy that enjoyed reading books; currently a guy that really enjoys reading books.

These are top read for that age group:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

    Bone series by Jeff Smith

    Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger

Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey (I despise this series, but kids love it)

    Like Percy Jackson:

    Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan

    Leven Thumps by Obert SKye

    The Tapestry by Henry Neff

    Erec Rex by Kaza Kingsley

    Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

Ranger's Apprentice and Gregor the Overlander would be my top picks. Both are gripping and interesting and both have several volumes to keep him busy.

A boy... that's kind of tough. I liked terry prachett's kids novels. There's a trilogy about gnomes, there was another trilogy about a little girl witch.

You might ask the children's librarian for recommendations...
