How do you solve this problem: (x-2)^2=36?
I'm in Algebra 2 and we're learning something called "completing the square"
Its these simple looking problems that I don't know how to solve.

take the square root of both sides
(x - 2)² =36
=> x - 2 = ±6
add 2 to both sides
=> x = 2±6
=> x = 2-6 or 2+6
=> x = 4 or 8
this is the key step to all uses of "completing the square" and important tool for dealing with quadratic equations. The point is to change the equations to such a form of question.

You don't have to complete the square to solve this
Take the square root of both sides:
sqrt((x-2)^2) = sqrt(36)
(x-2)=6
algebra gives x=8
