Is this a good way to start getting exercise?

I've been out of shape for about 15 years. I am 5'10", and now weigh about 260. I'm 39 years old.

So I've started trying to get some exercise. I don't have money for a gym membership, and I hate running. So here's what I've been doing:

I have a staircase in my house. I walk up and down this one flight of stairs non-stop for 20 minutes. I've been doing this 4 or 5 days per week. I average about 60 - 90 minutes per week, sometimes more, and I'm good sweaty mess every time I finish. Is this a good form of exercise to get me started? My plan is add one minute each week until I'm up to 35 or 40 min, 4-5 times per week. There's a condo complex near my home that has a giant staircase going all the way up a big hill. It's like 20 or 30 stories of stairs, and eventually, I want to be able to take those all the way to the top at a brisk pace. The first time I can do that, I'll probably jump around at the top of the hill like Rocky Balboa.

If I do nothing else but stick to this plan, will I drop some pounds? Or is this not enough to see any weight-loss?

stairs are a great way to exercise..because not only are you getting cardio youre also getting resistance. You'll eventually plateau if you get in the habit of doing the same routine. You should change it up a bit. maybe try sprinting up the stairs for 30 seconds followed by a 30 second break..you'll get tired much faster and won't even be able to last 40 mins.

Great cardio! I'm sure your heart loves you :) I am 6' and I weigh 190. I started where you were a year ago at 260. I didn't do stairs every day, I switched it up...as long as you are active and you get your heart going for at leas 20 minutes every day (longer if you can)...walking, stairs, riding a bicycle...as long as you eat healthy, eat often, and stay active, the weight will melt off :)

By just constant moving you are burning calories, as long as you don't pump those bad calories back into your body after your workouts your doing great. Stairs are a great way to lose weight and work on those calves and other leg muscles. To help with more stair exercises, try going to you tippy toes every step you take(great for the calves).
