If you buy a Shure SM-58, you'll probably never need another mic. This is primarily a live performance mic, but is perfectly fine for recording voices. They cost a little over $100. To record onto your computer, you'll also need an audio interface or mixer because good mics can't be plugged directly into your computer. The exception to this is a USB mic, which obviously plugs into your USB connection...but you won't be able to use a USB mic for live performance so it's less versatile.

Either mic will need an interface like this:

If you use a USB mic like this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/blue-snow... you won't need an interface, but it will only be good for use on your computer. If and when you want to start performing, you'll want to get an SM-58.

SM58 or RV10 microphone
The SM58 is mostly used in live performances, a lot of famous artist sing through that. It's kind of the norm
