Why do many people think that Spaniards are the same as Moors?

A lot of people seem to overemphasize the Moorish/Arabic influence on the genetic profile of Spaniards. Do they not understand that the growth and spread of Islam in Moorish Spain was primarily due to conversion of the native Hispano-Roman population rather than to a mass settlement of Arabs and Berbers from North Africa (or black Africans as some also believe)?

The study listed below provides more current genetic analysis of Iberians. It is said that only about 11% of Iberians have some Moorish ancestry whereas 20% or so actually have some Sephardic Jewish ancestry (many Jews entered Spain during the Moorish period and it seems many more of these converted during and after the Inquisition than the Moors).

In any event, the ancestry of the modern Spanish population is still predominantly pre-Moorish people who were a blend of the original ancient Iberians/Basques, Celts, Romans, Visigoths and others. They most closely resemble Italians and the southern French in terms of looks, not Arabs.

Update:

@Olumuji: I know that the Moors dominated much of Spain for several centuries and that, as the genetic data posted reveals, there was intermarriage via conversion and assimilation. However, it's equally true that the Moors were not the predominant ancestors of Spaniards, as the study also shows and also as the physical appearance of the average Spaniard indicates. Spaniards are primarily of Iberian, Celtic, Roman, and Visigothic (i.e. pre-Moorish) ancestry. Also, it should be noted that today's North Africans are not the same as the medieval Moors who would've ruled Spain since many of today's North Africans have more Saharan and/or sub-Saharan African admixture than the medieval Moors would have had, due to the trans-Saharan slave trade.

People mistake an Islamic invasion for the Arabian people that live today in Arabia. All of Europe is related to the Levant people from the northern part of the Sinai peninsula from 50,000 years ago. Northern African Berbers were Germanic Vandals, Levant people, Phoneticians and some northeast Africans from the Nile Delta. I did the National Geographic testing, where they test 150,000 markers and I learned a lot about all of this. They educate you. Their latest paper talks about how Europeans in the south do not group with Arabs. This includes Spain and Portugal. The Portuguese may have more Berber than Spanish people, being near Gibraltar. That does not mean anything since northern Africans group with Europeans. At most some people have up to 8% Berber, but that doesn't mean anything if Europeans are related to these people anyway. I'm from the north of Italy. My last African ancestor was 70,000 years ago and I had no markers in common with Arabs. What the study shows is that northern Africans group with Europeans and even the Levant people do. We also can group with the northern Middle East from 30,000 years ago. Even the Scandinavians countries have this old DNA... upward of 30%. The Arabians stand out, because they still group to an extent with sub Saharan Africans. The word Moor should be done away with. Real Arabians are a different group of people than the ones that entered Spain. I posted a recent study that looks at this.

there is not any such component as "Moor blood". The Spanish expelled the Moors out, in basic terms like the Italians. The Moors have been muslims, and the Spaniards Christians. there became no interracial, if there became, it may be the comparable as betraying the order of Christ, in no way the fewer, the pagans could finally end up awesome by making use of a rope. permit me wager, you're an Arab attempting to get exceeded an ecu. Europeans are white and white in common terms. in case you observed somone no longer white in Europe, then he became an immigrant, claiming to be son of previous Europa.

The Moorish/Semitic influence in the Spanish gene is considerable. They controlled the country for over seven centuries, during which they fused together little by little. After conquering the last Moorish enclave, the Spanish Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella forced all Arab/Moors and Jews to convert to the Catholic religion. Most comply and lost their identity. So,the likeness between Moors and Spaniards, especially the southern Spaniards,is strikingly similar.
