Has death sentence been a deterrent of criminality?

At present crime has risen to unsuspected heights, higher than anytime before.

if the death sentence were actually carried out and men were not sitting on death row waiting for a miracle.............maybe it would work. But with the eventualities of getting out on a some pardon it certainly doesnt do anything for the justice system.

As with the days of Moses.......................unless there is a harsh sentence for crime.....men keep doing it. With the devaluation of the dollar on the rise.....people are becoming unblanced . With the onset of insecurity , homelessness, hunger and divorce....crime will excelerate, crime will become a major concern..........jails just not big enough to house everyone .

What needs to be done is...every man who is proven guilty by DNA evidence...they should all walk the plant.........

so your neighbors are becoming your enemy......and soon it will be a state of the wild wild west.....

you will have to take the idea of capital punishment in your own hands......once society breaks down completely

There was a time when it took an average of 2 weeks to execute, and back then you could walk most streets without fear. Violent crime was at a low. When the potential killer knows he will be caught and eat his last meal in only a few weeks, believe me, he will consider that and may not resort to murder. However I stand against the death penalty simply because it is not done fairly across the land. Next I would make life in prison at the bare minimum of comfort. No hot water, bland tasting food ( enough to keep them alive ) No A/C or TV,that sort of treatment. I would only leave them the Bible to read, and no contact with their kin or friends, this would be a deterrent for sure!

No more than life sentences. Homicide rates for states that use the death penalty are consistently higher than for those that don’t. The most recent FBI data confirms this. For people without a conscience, fear of being caught is the best deterrent. The death penalty is no more effective in deterring others than life sentences.

No, the harder laws get, the harder criminals get, not the other way around.

China executes 1000s of people a year, and crime hasn't stop rising, murders still happen at an increasing rate, the baby-milk still gets poisoned, and the more executions happen, the less regard for human life in general.

That's the key, if society just goes and kills 'unwanted' elements, the value of human-life goes down, that will make people close to killing someone, closer to actually doing it.

Source(s): If you want life to be better, you need to have a high-regard for human-life, killing people isn't good, never.

It's hard to quantify how many murders were NOT committed because of the threat of the death penalty.

Any murderer that has been put to death has never murdered again. & the victims have closure.

    End of story.
