need urgent help !!:( car battery light on (red) How long till it dies? Can it die while the car is running?

Hi,it sounds like the charging system has failed! I would say based on my own experience that it will get you 40miles easily if you have no electrical drain ie.radio, heater, lights etc, whether it will start up again for your return trip I would be inclined to say it's risky - because you are not re-charging your battery!!!! I think you need to get your system checked professionaly and if proven faulty replace the unit. hope this helps Phil

My car is a chrysler sebring 2000.The car is pretty old and beat up (couple accidents, flood, etc) with 145k miles on it This is NOT the first battery used I am pretty sure I changed the battery with a brand new one, probably 7 years ago .

The battery light went on now. Never seen it...

you did not tell us if any of the driving is at night. And if it is your not going far so leave the car home. And find a friend or family member offer them a hundred bucks or rent a car its cheaper than a cab by half so use your head. The alternator might be going bad or it could be the battery. either way you cannot drive the car with the lights on as this puts a big load on the car electrical system which is not working correctly. So park the car and go to plan A and see what hppenns

I wouldn't be amazed if it's time for a new battery. 7 years is a long time, especially if it's had to be jumped multiple times over the years.

If it's just a bad battery and not an alternator, the worst that is going to happen is that you'll have to jump it before you leave, and jump it again for you leave to return home. It won't die on you while you're driving unless there's a problem with the charging system.

I can 't really say specifically about a Toyota, however, I have seen something similar in a late model General Motors product. A late model GM product the alternator can fail in such a way that it will pass all testing, but it will drain the battery overnight. Unless you know this about GM alternators, it will drive you crazy because everything tests good. It is quite possible that a Toyota can do this also, so don't be so quick to rule out the alternator.

No your car will not shut off if the battery dies but if you still drive it your car is going to run off the alternatorand that's going to frie your alternator to and that's more money to spent. You should make it but won't make it back because it won't start. But you should take it to ADVANCE AUTO parts and they will do a free system check. They will check your alternator batteries and starter on and off the car.

Check and make sure ur battery cables are tight and getting good contact. Ur car can die when ur driving if ur alternator is weak and not charging the battery.

it could die with you while your driving ! once the battery goes dead then the alternator will furnish the juice until it goes out then it will dim your lights and eventually your car will stop !

CAUTION!

That light being on may mean that the belt that turns the water pump is broke, missing or slipping. This can result in engine over heating and/or engine failure. It can result in warped head/s.

Make sure the belts are intact on the pulleys before going any further!
