Why was my "friend"/crush acting so weird?

So, there's this kid in my class. In 7th grade, we had a school dance and he stared at me the whole time so I figured he probably liked me. And I liked him back. A few days later, my friend told me that my crush told her he liked me. Then we didn't talk for awhile.

Over the summer, I got a text from that friend. It said, "(your crush) wanted your number so I gave it to him." Then I got a text from him and we started talking. Eventually I said, "(My friend) said you like me as more than a friend. Is that true?" he said yes and I told him I liked him too.

In September of 8th grade, the friend texted him and asked him I he wante to go out with me. He said no. I was sad and confused. (And don't say he thinks we're too young to date because I know he's had girl friends before.)

Now, whenever we talk it's awkward. We both moved on but I still kinda like him. I don't get it. If he REALLY liked me, why wouldn't he date me. Do you think he lied? Why? I'm so confused.
