How to mute a program?

All right, I know how to mute and program, but I was wondering if there were a way to only mute it when I had something else ontop? Because the program I'm using has a background music that I like to listen to, but I don't want it to play while I'm doing something else, but then again, I don't want to mute and un-mute it every single time I use it (I get distracted very easily, so I don't use it for long periods of time). It's like when you play a game and then do something else. The game's background music doesn't keep playing after you minimize it.

Anyone know how to enable something like that for a specific program?

use the inbuilt 'mute' function in the program. windows cannot mute individual programs, as all of the running processes use the windows directsound interface to output sound.
