Is sadness an indulgence?

It can be an indulgence, but it can also be a curse. I deal with daily chronic pain and it leaves me extremely depressed sometimes. When I get into that funk, I call it my "pity party," which is why it can be seen as an indulgence. But since I can't work, I sometimes feel lucky to be able to indulge my sadness by crying as much as I want during the day and staying in bed as much as I need. On the other hand, sometimes I need to kick myself in the butt and say "NO! The pain and sadness will not win today!" Sadness is only an indulgence as long as you "enjoy" it, meaning, it brings some sort of release or closure. But when that sadness creeps into your everyday life it can be a dangerously destructive force, bringing otherwise happy people into a darkness that is difficult, if not impossible to shake. I'm still working on that...

    Namaste old friend. ♥

Right now as I saw your question, I'm watching a documentary film, "9/11: The Falling Man". This film deals with, mainly, one particular photo of a man who jumped from one of the towers. The film also spends much of it's story on describing how hard it was for family members or acquaintances to claim the man as "theirs". It's as though the "jumpers" were marked with humiliation; that they chose the easier way to die. People actually became angry at the photo being published, they couldn't bare the pain of seeing it, even though most people saw video of jumpers that day. I'm in shock that anyone could consider the jumpers as cowards, not that the film was exactly going that far. Still, it touches on this idea, over and over--that the jumpers were conscientiously choosing suicide over the alternative.

Your question relates these same issues-- in my mind, at least. Sadness is the easy way, if it means you give in to "giving up". But, most of the time, the "giving-in" act is not a preferred choice. Giving in to defeat (sadness, in many ways is being defeated) is not an option you choose willingly, or graciously.

At times, sadness does feel like indulgent because you're not utilizing full strength to be sad, as you would if you were struggling to maintain control. This is where the movie's theme intermingles and answers your question. When the need to escape arose for those people who jumped to their death, it did become the "easiest" death, but they weren't being indulgent. Sadness only feels good when used as a temporary vacation from life. Life feels much better.

Celebrating Or Indulging Our Sadness Is Healthy

I would say no. Everyone is sad at one point or another - it's a part of life. Feeling sad for a few days, over an incident, is normal. When you're sad without reason, day in/day out, it's something more serious (but not indulgent).

No, it's an emotion. It's important to FEEL sadness at times, like when someone you love has died. Sadness is NOT the same as depression, it is not a mental illness although denying sadness or refusing to feel it, might cause mental illness.

So many people are afraid of sadness. Yes, it is very painful, but it's normal and NECESSARY. It should not be drugged away.

Sadness is a spirit. People possessed by this spirit feel always sad even without a reason. But spirits cannot possess people without a reason. They need at least a tiny reason to possess.

Human beings are ruled by spirits but humans are taught to control and rule the spirits which even the people who teach do not know. Spirits possess people according to the mental state of the human beings. This is an all time phenomena occurring in all humans. Human beings are always under the influence of spirits. Often thinking and talking about bad subjects or bad imaginations even for fun can take serious turns on one who think and talk.

All of your activities, talks and even thoughts determine what kind of spirits you will have for your life. All knowledge, skills, emotions, feelings, interests and everything are spirits. Even thoughts are not your own. When you want to take decision on a subject, one after another they think and you just listen and choose or reject the ideas which they transmit to your mind through your brain in the form of thoughts. A human being during his/her lifetime is living with many spirits which have joined one by one since birth. Human beings are robots made of different materials (flesh, bones, tissues etc.,) and toys of the spirits for their games.

Don't take interest in tragical novels and films. Don't give much time for tragical thoughts in your mind. See that the spirit of happiness is always with you. From your own mood you can easily recognize it. If you are possessed by the spirit of sadness you must replace it by the spirit of happiness. You cannot do this at once. For few months you must read, see and think only the things related to happiness. Avoid talking about tragical things even for fun. Take part in happy occasions. You must tell yourself and think that you hate tragedy. If you do these things continuously, the spirit of tragedy will move leaving the way to the spirit of happiness. All spirits (good and bad) have the dominating character. They can take you to the extent of sacrifice or suicide. Therefore you must keep them always in control.

Yes, along with all emotionalities. There is an inner secret payoff people get from giving into emotions. On the inside one is attached to projecting themself as the main character on stage of the medlodrama of life's tragic play.

Sadness is attributed to a lower level of consciousness by the user interface. People with higher levels of consciousness find less reason to dwell in those things they`ve risen above.

When taken to extremes, yes! Sadness can also open doors to greater realizations... We are not meant to dwell just in the valleys of death, but to soar to the skies of joy as well. Also we are meant to be established so we are at peace within, knowing that all is well within our souls.

feeling sad is good but not frequently..if there is some big problem in life then only we should feel sad and make a strong decision to overcome it.
