Can a bladder infection cause some mental issues for 4 year old?

A little girl in my class was going potty (unritating) a lot each day. She missed a week of school and the parents told us she had a bladder infection. She was out for a whole week. Now she is back and still asking to go potty a lot. The parents have told us that she has been treated for the infection and it is cured. They told us that we need to make sure that she is not stressed out and please provide her with a calm environment. They told us that the doctor said that sometimes a bladder infection can cause a child to mentally think they need to go a lot - even though they have been treated and cured. Has anybody out there ever heard of such a thing?

My daughter recently went through that. She goes to the bathroom 5-6 times in an hour. It could be that they feel subconscious about going on themselves and if its just a drop of urine that comes out, they are satisfied and go about their business. We had to tell her forcefully at times not to go be because she had recently just left the bathroom but when she turned five, the trips to the bathroom slowed down.

    I hope this helps

  • This issue is actually relatively common, even in adults. Many people report issues of that nature with their children, and even with themselves. Some men over a certain age often get themselves screened for prostate cancer because it can often cause a similar reaction, at least at the mental stage. Hope I helped, good luck.

I worked in an assisted living home. When our seniors got UTI's they started really acting out and we had no idea what their problem was so we would send them to the hospital only to find they had a UTI. So I guess it could happen to a 4 year old too? They wouldn't even know where they were sometimes. It would really get bad to where they would become aggressive and / or violent.

Have you spoken to your school nurse? She would be the best source of information.
