Why couldn't Merle in Walking Dead go back to the prison?
Merle seemed pretty upset and serious, and it makes me wonder why he couldn't go back? He had his brother and everything, maybe Merle was just as sick of the world as it is and couldn't stand it?

I don't think he was "sick of the world and couldn't stand it".
It's more that:
Merle knew he didn't fit in at the Prison.
He knew people didn't like him.
He wanted to do something good before he died
and that's exactly what he done.
